What does it mean to be human?  People have been wrestling with this question for as long as there have been people.  Can we come to a universal religious view of our humanity?  What is at stake in these questions?

We will explore the life and ministry of Rev. Athalia Lizzie Johnson Irwin (1862-1915). Although she was a woman of many firsts, her name is frequently omitted when compiling a list of female Universalist ministers. We will speak her name again and give tribute to the power of Universalism to shape a truly remarkable life. She will no longer be the woman history forgot.

The Universalist Herald contains a wide variety of viewpoints concerning “Universalism” within its pages. Because the content originates from subscribers, the topic is obviously an encompassing one. As editor, I chose to give voice to each author, to express their viewpoint in an educational manner, with a focus on enlightenment. How does that work? What feedback do I get from readers?

  • About Our Presenter:
  • David Damico is an instructor of Graphic Design at Finger Lakes Tech and Career Center in Stanley, NY. He is also a board member for the LeRoy, NY Historical Society and a grant reviewer for the Genesee/Orleans Art Council.
  • Most summers, he volunteers in the 1870 Print Shop at the Cobblestone Museum in Childs, NY and is a hobbyist letterpress printer at his home in upstate NY. He also sings tenor in a barbershop quartet. David was recruited by Joyce Gilbert to be editor of the universalist Herald in 2012 and been a UU since 1997.

Using money, power, threats, and “lobbying” to get your way at church and elsewhere:  Does that sound like the Universalist way of doing things?  Sometimes we learn a lot about how to “do religion right” when someone does it wrong.  Let’s see how this plays out at an old Universalist church with beautiful stained glass windows!
