October – Goodenough and the Worst One Ever
Just over one year ago, in my first visit to the Universalist Convocation, I told the story of “The Worst Universalist I Ever Met,” ending on a hopeful note that this person might have finally heard the message of the historic church where she had done so much damage.
I changed the names of people and places to protect all those concerned. Just over 130 years ago, the Rev. S. Goodenough tried his best to urge the worst Universalist of his time (or maybe ever!) to show compassion and concern for the many lives his actions and policies had impacted so gravely. He also tried to do so without naming names, for reasons we’ll explore in this evening’s presentation.

January – The Cosmic Puzzle
The overall topic is religious pluralism and intellectual humility. The concept is a case for embracing not-knowing and seeing world religions as complementary pieces of a shared human search, rather than competitors for the one correct answer, which, I believe, is an essential underpinning for Universalism.

February – The Birthing of Wisdom
Imbolc is the traditional Gaelic festival that celebrated the ending of winter and the beginning of spring. The festival falls midway between the sinter solstice and spring equinox.
Imboc, “from the belly,” speaks of birth, the rebirth of nature. In Celtic spirituality is speaks to the birthing of wisdom, a wisdom is simultaneously both profane and holy. During this evening’s vespers we will celebrate Imbolc.
